Speed to lead

How quickly do you follow up with your leads? Minutes, hours, days? The speed at which you engage your inbound leads is an indicator of how successful, or unsuccessful your sales engine will perform. In this article we’ll discuss “Speed to Lead”, why it matters, and what you can do about it.
Definition
Speed to Lead is the idea that how fast you respond to a new inquiry predicts whether it turns into a conversation, and eventually a customer. A lead’s interest is highest the moment they reach out and fades quickly. Respond quickly and increase your sales with net new customers.
Research
Below are two examples of research by Harvard and MIT that prove the value of "Speed to Lead". While a bit dated, the core concepts remain as true today as they ever were.
Companies that responded within an hour were about 7x more likely to qualify the lead than those that waited even one more hour. They were 60x more likely than companies that waited 24 hours or longer. The same study found the average B2B response time was about 42 hours, and many leads got no reply at all. [Harvard Business Review (2011), "The Short Life of Online Sales Leads"]
Calling within 5 minutes instead of 30 made reaching the lead roughly 100x more likely and qualifying them about 21x more likely. [Lead Response Management Study (Dr. James Oldroyd, MIT/InsideSales)].
Why does Speed Matter?
Intent fades with time. The prospect is thinking about their problem and they want it solved!
Being first frames the conversation. The first to engage often sets the criteria the buyer uses to judge everyone else.
Speed signals what working with you is like. A fast reply suggests you'll be a responsive and competent partner that cares about their business.
How to improve Speed to Lead
Measure it. Track the time from inquiry to first real human contact, not just to an auto-reply.
Route leads right away. Send each one to a named owner, with a backup if that person is out.
Automate the first touch, then follow with a person. An instant, personal-sounding acknowledgment plus a booking link, then a human reply within minutes.
Keep following up. Many leads need several attempts across channels before they respond.
Set a service-level target, such as a reply within 5 minutes during business hours and within 1 hour after hours.
You need to feed the funnel! And what a better way to do that than with timely follow ups to inbound leads. Consider the simple tweaks mentioned earlier to meet your customers where they are…quickly. The customers are knocking at your door and you need to answer before they find their way to a competing business.
